Administrative history

The Nuclear Physics Division (NP) was created in 1961 to carry out CERN's experimental program (except track chamber experiments) for the Synchro-Cyclotron (SC) and Proton-Synchrotron (PS) accelerators. In the same year the program of electronic experiments, emulsions experiments and nuclear chemistry began on both accelerators.

In 1967 it also began experiments on the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) facility, and was responsible for experiments on other new facilities at CERN when they became available.

In 1966 the Physics I Department was created and NP Division was a part of this until the Department was discontinued in 1976.

In 1976 the NP Division was discontinued. Most of its work was continued by the Experimental Physics Division (EP), which was created in the same year. However, some NP staff and functions, along with parts of the former Track Chambers Division (TC), went to form the new Experimental Physics Facilities Division (EF) which was also formed in 1976.

In 1990 a part of EP and EF Divisions merged to form Particle Physics Experiments Division (PPE).

In 1998 PPE Division and a part of Electronics and Computing for Physics (ECP) Division merged to form again the Experimental Physics Division (EP).

Scope and content

The Nuclear Physics and Experimental Physics collection contains various scientific and administrative papers about NP and EP divisions.

These CERN Divisions were responsible for carrying out basic research in the field of particle physics, as well as R&D programmes in the general domains of detector, electronics and experiment related computing technologies. They provided technical, logistics and administrative support for experimental teams performing experiments at all CERN accelerator facilities.
