Biographical history

Günther Plass came to work in the Proton Synchrotron Magnet Group (PS-MA) at CERN in 1956, when the PS was under construction.

From 1960 to 1967 he worked in the Nuclear Physics Apparatus (NPA) division on the development of the PS fast ejection system and the development of a system for the determination of the neutrino spectrum. He was responsible for the neutrino beam and also for infrastructure and safety aspects of Gargamelle bubble chamber. He took part in the initial design of the fast ejection equipment for Serpukhov Institute.

In 1968 he returned to the PS division for the setting up of the Synchrotron Ring group (magnet, RF system and ejection system).

From 1971 to 1976 he worked on the development of the multiturn ejection for the SPS, becoming responsible for the injector and also a member of the SPS design committee.

In 1974 he joined the Linac group in the PS division for the construction of Linac 2, and consolidation of Linac 1. He took part in the radio-frequency quadrupole project, the launching of the LEAR project, and preparation for the e+- pre-accelerators.

In 1982 he was appointed as deputy to the LEP Project leader Emilio Picasso and in 1983 leader of the newly created LEP division. In 1990 he became Director of Accelerators.

He retired in 1995.
