Jos Engelen

Biographical history

Jos Engelen studied physics at the Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands) where he obtained an MSc degree in 1973. After graduation he worked at the same university as a researcher and lecturer, and gained his PhD degree in 1979.

From 1979 to 1985 Engelen worked at CERN as a fellow, then a staff member.

In 1985 he accepted a post as physicist at the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics (NIKHEF).

In 1987 he became professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Amsterdam. At CERN and DESY (Hamburg, Germany) he carried out experiments in the area of the strong interaction, hard photoproduction and dispersion in deep inelastic collisions. He also developed initiatives for research in the field of astroparticle physics.

From 1991 to 1995 he was a member of CERN Super Proton Synchrotron Committee (SPSC), and from 1995 to 2001 a member of CERN Large Hadron Collider Committee (LHCC) (chairman from 1998 to 2000).

From 2001 to 2003 he was Director of NIKHEF, National Institute for High Energy and Nuclear Physics (Amsterdam, The Netherlands).

In 2004 he was appointed as Chief Scientific Officer of CERN until 2008. During this period his responsibilities included overseeing the construction and commissioning of the new Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator and the associated experimental set-ups.

In 2009 he became President of the Governing Board of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
